Scoundrel edition by Wendy Rathbone Romance eBooks Reviews

This was a relatively well-written enjoyable story.
If you didn’t know beforehand, you’d realize it while reading - this book is written by an author with an amazing grasp on expression; a true poet. The story of Antares, the pleasure slave, and his space captain, Slate, is a tale of invading aliens, rescuing pirates, and the age old story of love. What makes this story truly special is how the author uses her powers of expression to enmesh you into the lives of the characters she has created.
Scoundrel is the story of a sex slave and a space pirate. When I read the description, I was hooked on that concept alone, because I have a deep love for pirates, and this sounded like a rescue story to me, and I love rescue stories even better than I love pirates. I had visions of a beautifully written love story where the downtrodden sex slave is released from his horrible life to fall into the waiting arms of his pirate boyfriend.

This was not that story. It was an even better story, because instead of being a downtrodden sex slave, Antares went into his profession willingly. On his home planet of Anada, choosing the profession of a giver of pleasure is a well-honored and respected way to make your way in the world. When you get to the age of 18, you get to consider doing it, and then you get transformed into a honey-scented, pleasure-loving individual, and the world is your oyster, so to speak. Antares is lucky to do what he loves, and when he gets sold to a master on Anada, he's even happier, because he is spoiled, he is loved, he is well-regarded, and his life is a good one.

When the Empire's fleet come to take over the planet, Antares (and his fellow sex slaves) is not happy to be taken from his life, he's angry and sad and he feels lost.

Along the way, as Antares and his little crew of captured sex slaves try to adapt to their new surroundings, the ship is taken over by a pirate and his crew. The lead pirate's name is Slate and he's about as mesmerizing as they come (dark and dashing and sporting an earring in one ear), but he's a little confused by the fact that Antares and his fellows like being sex slaves, and want help finding new masters. Nope, Slate doesn't get it at all!

The way Wendy put that trope right on its head (that is, sex slaves who don't want to be rescued from their sex-slave lives), just amazed and delighted me. It felt so new, and so genuine, because of the way Antares is so patient with Slate, as they fly through space in their pirated ship, trying to teach Slate that the world doesn't have to be just one way.

The uniqueness of the story (I won't spoil the plot for you but it does have a Happy Ending), added to Wendy's superb writing style, and you've got a terrific book with a very fun read. Wendy's got a poet's soul, and so her prose is rich with feeling and evokes all the senses.
